I usually rely on Rob at the Snowblog for a discussion of the latest Dr. Who episode (n.b. link contains spoilers), but he’s obviously been too busy to watch it, as no one could fail to pass comment, could they?
As someone who indulges in Dr Who from a mixture of deep-seated nostalgia for the days of watching the very first daleks (and yes, I was behind the sofa) and equally deep-seated lust for the current incumbent of the title role, this ticked all the boxes – in some cases twice over! (If you’ve seen it you’ll get the joke.) If some recent episodes have looked a bit ramshackle (plot as well as staging) this was a fantastic climax and a fitting swan song (as my sci-fi savvy informants tell me) from Russell T. The plot was ludicrous (of course) and brilliant, with just enough poignancy to get me reaching for the tissue box – and then putting it down again. He threw everything and everyone in, tricked us us into thinking that this really was the end, and then contrived a ‘resolution’ that was true to the series on every level. As a writer I’m full of envy – and I loved it.
I shall say no more just in case there are some of you out there still to view. Don’t leave it too long.
