I have followed Scottish Rugby from a tender(ish) age, but no Calcutta Cup, Triple Crown or (don’t mention the sponsor) Six Nations will ever be quite the same without Bill MacLaren’s amazing gift o’ the gab, and it’s sad that since his retirement we have had no distinctive voice to take his place.
In the last ten (?) years the rules of the game have changed; we no longer have to put up with endless kicking to touch or scrums that go on forever. But I don’t know that I enjoy it any more than I did in the bad old days. It’s an object lesson in how much a knowledgeable and articulate commentator can bring to a sport, especially to those who follow more out of patriotism than any expereince of playing the game.
Obviously we can’t bring him back, but how long before the BBC can come up with someone even half as good?
