Photography in fiction (1): Other people’s photos

  1. Dear Ms. Bacon, this evening (10/13/23, 12:03 a.m. PST) I just finished reading William Boyd’s novel Sweet Caress. All through the reading of this wonderful book (I’ve read several of his and am a great fan) I kept wondering who on earth took these photos? How much of the novel is fiction? I loved them all, but it really was a bothersome inner thought going on as I kept pace with the book. And no explanation by the author as you know, and that just left me cold. Before I discovered your site, the only way to get to the answer (at this time of night) was to read an article from The Telegraph, which supposedly explained it all: but one had to subscribe. Well, that doesn’t work for me at the moment. But I did find you, and your enlightening post, and I want to thank you for doing the work for us out there, out here, in California. Again, thank you for your posting and for completing the circle that was my very satisfying reading of Boyd’s Sweet Caress. Sincerely, Mark Zipoli
