I had never heard of Strawberry Hill Gothic as an architectural style until Sunday when we spent a memorable night at Donnington Grove in Berkshire. As the weather changed from sodden to sparkling, the trees were gorgeous and the hotel fascinating. Although our main preoccupation was golf, I’ve never been so cross at having left my camera behind, especially as I can’t find a ‘royalty-free’ picture anywhere on the web! Meanwhile you can read all about the place on David Nash Ford’s Berkshire History site or find more images on flickr. Sad that there are no pictures of the interior which is equally diverting and apparently undocumented – ? Obviously a return trip is in order.
I think a gothic gremlin must have got into my head at Donnington. You can see the result when I paid a visit to Snowblog today (Tuesday) and left a terribly clever comment. Doh!
