A Writer Reads: Maggie O’Farrell

  1. Interesting idea. Whether subliminal or not, the books we read do influence how and what we write. The next book I read I think now I shall be consciously thinking of what I might learn from it as regards style. I’ve always liked the concepts behinds Maggie O’Farrell’s books but somehow they always fail to live up to the promise with me. I’m afraid I threw in the towel with this book, unable to engage with either character, never sure whose story this was supposed to be.

    1. Hi Kit
I must admit I nearly gave up too. Apart from the characters, I thought it took too long for the strands of the story to come together. I mean, it’s obvious they will in the end, but I think the reader wants a few hints of where the connections are. The prize-winners are always contentious!
